The world famous Burt Munro Challenge had local representation from our President, Colin Metcher during the 2016 festival. Amongst other luminaries were Guy Martin and Josh Coppins (former World #2 MX racer). Josh Coppins won the beach race and although Guy Martin competed, was not a trophy winner in either the beach race or the road races. On the other hand, having Guy attend is a real coup for the Invercargill club. Colin however was quite successful and finished his race in 5th overall. He said that his races were restarted three times because it was impossible to tell the difference between the official 'flag drop' and the blustering wind making the flag appear to drop. On one of the restarts, Colin just sat 10 metres ahead of the line after jumping the start. He said it was near impossible to push his old dunger backwards through the sand. (My words, not his). The photos of Col shown above were taken at the Sunday Speedway meeting. You would recognise those ancient riding pants anywhere although the riding number looks wrong. Colin recommends anyone wanting a fantastic holiday with a bit of bike racing thrown in to give it a try in 2017. Of course be prepared for Antarctic conditions, unexpected cancellations, lots of rain and even more wind.
The racing commences on Thursday with a Classic Hill Climb, then a Supercross race that night, the Beach Races on Friday, Road Racing on the Teretonga circuit during the day and Speedway on Saturday night with the Invercargill Street Races on Sunday and presumably more Speedway on Sunday also.
